8 Tips to Improve GPS Accuracy

Ways to Help Improve Your Smartphone GPS Accuracy and Performance

GPS positioning can vary by smartphone, location, surrounding buildings, even the protective covering you have over your device. While GPS location services can give you a good approximation to the device’s general location, here are some tips you can use both within the EmergenSee app and other apps to improve your GPS accuracy.

  1. Make sure your GPS is on – Although it sounds simple, check to make sure your GPS and location services are turned on. For the best results, have your GPS and location service on ahead of time as it can take as much as 15 minutes to get an accurate lock on the satellites you need.
  2. Make sure your phone and software are up to date – Update your phone and other software. Up to date software will often provide better results with less bugs.
  3. Remove your phone from the case – Phone cases/pouches can potentially interfere with GPS signal so for best results remove the phone from them.
  4. Clear line of sight – If you can’t see through it, GPS most likely won’t get through it. When trying to get a good GPS signal, make sure there is a clear, unobstructed view of the sky from your phone. Even your clothes/body can block GPS signal so hold your phone away from yourself and about shoulder height for best results.
  5. Avoid buildings and large solid objects – Large buildings and other objects nearby can block or alter GPS signals resulting in poor or incorrect results.
  6. Keep your battery charged – The lower your phone’s battery is, the harder it is to get good location results- so keep your battery charged when possible.
  7. Avoid 3rd party task killers – Task killers may sometimes interfere with your phone’s location services, causing delayed or inaccurate location data.
  8. Avoid metal and electronic interference – Metal objects- especially titanium and steel, as well as electronics can cause interference with your phone’s GPS signal when too close to your phone so move away from these objects if possible.
